ABOUT US

The Cheyenne Frontier Days Memorial Foundation, a tax exempt public charity under IRS code 501(c)(3), was established in 1986 for the purpose of providing scholarships to Cheyenne Frontier Days volunteers and their immediate dependents to any college of their choosing.

The Cheyenne Frontier Days Memorial Foundation has awarded over $1,389,900 to 1,536 scholarship recipients since 1985. Board Members include: Jim Hearne, Bill Benskin, Laura Jeffrey, Rod Hottle, Angela Johnson, Judie Petersen, and Craig Alexander.

The Foundation is a separate entity that assists the CFD mission by identifying individuals who have provided volunteer service to CFD and then award eligible volunteers and their dependents financial assistance to help defray costs associated with post-secondary education at accredited institutions of their choice; based upon years of CFD volunteer service and academic performance.

Our Story

Tom Powers, a past General Chairman, found out he did not have long to live. He wanted to establish an organization to give back to CFD volunteers and their immediate families through providing college scholarships. He asked his wife Peggy Powers, Harry Speltz, Mike Lane and Kent Rutledge to assist in establishing an organization. Kent Rutledge and Jim Hearne provided their services to establish the Foundation and apply for exempt status. The Cheyenne Frontier Days Memorial Foundation was incorporated in October of 1984. The Foundation applied for recognition of exemption under IRC Section 501(c)(3) and was granted exemption through an advanced ruling on July 19, 1986.

The organization was established to solicit donations from the community to provide scholarships to high school graduating seniors of Laramie County planning to enroll at either the University of Wyoming or Laramie County Community College. The mission was later expanded to provide scholarships to Cheyenne Frontier Days volunteers and their immediate dependents to any college of their choosing.

The Board of Directors continues to carry out the mission of providing an educational benefit to volunteers and their immediate dependents (those that have volunteered for at least five years and are current volunteers). We believe it is a great benefit to the volunteers and promotes the value of advanced education.

The members of the Board are passionate about providing scholarships and are engaged in the mission of the Foundation. The Board members and our other great volunteers provide their time, talent and resources to make our Foundation a success. We receive a great amount of volunteer time and resources provided by individuals, their employers, and their businesses.
